Frequently asked questions

Reveal Recipe is a free recipe extractor and cookbook: paste a recipe link to see just the ingredients and steps. Here's what people ask about it most.

What is Reveal Recipe?

Reveal Recipe is a free web app that turns a recipe web page into a clean page with just the ingredients and the steps. You paste the recipe's link, and it removes the ads, pop-ups and long introductions, then lets you scale the recipe, convert units, cook hands-free, save it to your own cookbook and add it to a shopping list.

Is Reveal Recipe free?

Yes. Every feature is free, there are no ads on recipe pages, and you don't need an account or an email address. Signing in with Google is optional.

Which recipe websites work with Reveal Recipe?

Most of them. Reveal Recipe works with recipe pages from most food blogs and recipe sites, such as Budget Bytes, RecipeTin Eats, Sally's Baking Addiction, Love and Lemons and Cookie and Kate. The works-with list says which sites were checked.

Why couldn't Reveal Recipe read a recipe?

Usually for one of three reasons: the link is a search or category page rather than the recipe itself, the site doesn't allow Reveal Recipe to open its pages (Allrecipes, Simply Recipes, Serious Eats and EatingWell), or the page doesn't share its recipe in a way Reveal Recipe can read. You can still type any recipe in with Add your own recipe.

Where are my saved recipes kept?

On your device, in this browser. Your cookbook, notes, tags, collections, shopping list, week plan and settings are never sent to our servers. On an iPhone, add Reveal Recipe to your Home Screen so the cookbook is still there after a week away. If you sign in with Google, a copy is also kept in your own Google Drive, in a private folder only Reveal Recipe can open, so your other devices can sync it.

Can I edit a saved recipe?

Yes. Open the recipe, choose More, then Edit recipe. You can change the name, servings, times, ingredients and steps, drag those lines into a new order, and add a photo from a link, your camera or your photo library. The link back to the original site stays, and so does nutrition from that page. Refresh from the site asks before it replaces your edits.

Do I need an account?

No. Everything works without one. Sign in with Google only if you want your cookbook on more than one device, such as your phone and your laptop. There's no password to create and no new account to set up.

How do I get my recipes on another device?

Sign in with Google on each device, from Sign in at the top of the page or in the phone tab bar. Your cookbook, collections, shopping list, week plan, recently viewed recipes and settings then stay the same everywhere, a few seconds after each change. Without signing in, export your cookbook from the cookbook page and import that file on the other device. The file includes your shopping list, week plan, recently viewed recipes and settings.

Does Reveal Recipe work offline?

Yes, for what you've saved. Every saved recipe keeps a full copy, so it opens without a connection, and so do the shopping list and the week plan. Revealing a new recipe needs a connection.

Can I install Reveal Recipe as an app?

Yes. Use your browser's Install or Add to Home Screen option on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, macOS or ChromeOS. On Android the installed app also appears in the Share menu, so you can share a recipe straight to it.

How does the bookmarklet work?

On a desktop browser, drag the Reveal Recipe button from the homepage to your bookmarks bar. When you're on a recipe page, click that bookmark and the recipe opens in Reveal Recipe.

Can I scale a recipe or convert it to metric?

Yes. Change the servings and every ingredient amount scales with it. Switch between US and metric units and the amounts and oven temperatures convert, in the ingredients and in the steps.

What is cook mode?

Cook mode is a full-screen view for the kitchen: bigger text, ingredients and steps you tap to tick off, a step progress bar, and the screen kept awake where the browser allows it. Times in the steps, such as 25 minutes, become one-tap timers that ring when they finish.

Does Reveal Recipe credit the original recipe creator?

Yes. Every recipe shows the site and author it came from, with a link back to the original page. Reveal Recipe doesn't publish or host other sites' recipes; it shows the recipe you asked for, to you.

Is Just the Recipe free?

Just the Recipe has a free tier. Its help center says the free version saves up to 20 recipes, and that changing the portion size, printing and unlimited saves are Premium. The App Store listing, as of 10 October 2026, also labels unit conversion as Premium and shows in-app purchases at $1.99, $3.99 and $24.99. Scaling, units, timers, cook mode and the shopping list are free in Reveal Recipe.

What is a free alternative to Paprika?

Reveal Recipe is free, with no account, and includes scaling, unit conversion, step timers, cook mode and a shopping list. Paprika Recipe Manager is sold separately for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows. A side-by-side list is on the Paprika comparison page.
